It is only taken seriously by Catholics who would fear it. Protestants, agnostics, atheists, excommunication does nothing to or for them.

Ditto withholding the Eucharist. A Protestant is saved by Jesus. Agnostics aren’t sure they need to be saved. Atheists believe they don’t.

What actually happens in Heaven is another story, of course.
