Pro-Life Academy. Biology: Embryogenesis (II)

February 2, 2010 by Gerard M. Nadal

Pro-Life Academy every Tuesday and Thursday.

Warning: This material contains graphic descriptions of the biological events involved in human reproduction. Those under parental supervision should first get permission. Those who may be easily upset by such frank discussion or the content itself are advised to forgo this lesson.

Okay, that was the disclaimer. If you’re still with me, click on this great animation to see what it takes for a sperm to fertilize the egg. (Make sure your sound is turned on.)
.

.
.
Now that we’ve lightened the mood a bit, let’s talk about how it all begins. Recall from previous lessons that the gametes, sperm and egg, are haploid cells containing half of the chromosomes of a somatic cell. (If you are just joining us, all of these terms are defined in earlier classes here at Pro-Life Academy. As always, no chewing gum in class!)

Ovulation

Great Video explanation here, so I’ll shut up now.
.
.

.
.
During intercourse, the male ejaculates roughly 500,000,000 sperm cells. Only 50-500 cells reach the egg.

Fertilization

Again, I’ll be quiet. Warning: Graphic video. Click Here.

Finally, an interesting video on some history. Click Here.

Class Dismissed.
See ya on Thursday.
