The Culture of Life Gains Momentum in Canada

May 17, 2010 by Gerard M. Nadal

My Colleague at HeadlineBistro and bother Knight of Columbus, Marc Nadeau, writes about the growing pro-life movement among our family in Canada. This is truly exciting stuff. Read on...

Last Thursday, a crowd of more than 10,000 – the majority of which were young people – gathered on Parliament Hill in Ottawa to express their stand for the culture of life. According to many observers, this year’s National March for Life was the biggest to date.

Two days later, on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, a packed room in a Quebec City hotel awaited different speakers, among whom was Cardinal Marc Ouellet, the leading spokesperson for the gospel of life in the Canadian Catholic hierarchy.

Addressing subjects like abortion, euthanasia, the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman, family issues and the civilization of love – just to name a few – the archbishop of Quebec City called upon Catholics, along with men and women of good faith, to intensify their mobilization and actions for the culture of life, which is also the culture of respect for the unborn, the elderly and women.

Sadly, our ‘conservative’ party will NOT open the abortion issue to debate even though Canada actually has NO law on abortion.
Babies here can be killed right up to the day they’re supposed to be born.

I do believe the tide is changing though. I really do believe that. I also believe that there is going to be greater ecumenism because of this very important issue. We’ve never had a March For Life in our area but we hope to change that for next year.

I wish my family could have gone this year. Last year in Ottawa it was quite an experience. The storm was incredible – driving rain, winds were fierce and the crowd was the largest they had ever had with many, many young people. I spoke with Silent No More Awareness (US) along with the Canadian men and women. When we returned from the March (short comparatively speaking with Washington DC) to the steps of Parliament Hill, the winds were slowing down and the rain slowly stopping. However, when the brave and courageous women and men stood before the crowd and began to give their testimonies, the sun shone, it was warm and a beautiful day. It was as if the evil had been disbursed and replaced by the grace and mercy of God – the Light and Life-Giver! It was almost like World Youth Day in Toronto. Everyone remarked about events and the young people remained to hear our testimonies. Some were there for the first time and spoke to some of us after the March ended. They were touched – you could see it in their eyes! The Holy Spirit is working in the hearts of all people. We did have opposition there in a very small minority. Yet, as God promised, He will prevail. He has the final word, His Justice and His Love which will conquer ALL hearts in the end. We have the final victory in our Lord and Saviour! Thanks for posting this! We should stand united with our Canadian brothers and sisters. They have had abortion on demand far longer than we – 40 yrs last year. 40 Days for Life is also impacting Canada and other international countries – hopefully, this Fall, it will be even larger! Blessings!
