Dr. Nadal, thank you for your Christmas thoughts! A week ago an elderly woman asked me why would God let such horror happen to innocent children, referring to the Newtown tragedy. I tried as best I could to express that God brings goodness out of everything that happens but I could tell my words did little to console her aching heart. Once I read your Christmas blog, I knew your articulation of how in Gods supreme plan for His children He brings about good was exactly what my friend needed to hear. I read the blog over the phone and now I’m sending it to her in the mail. I am a faithful follower and wish to express my genuine gratitude to you for taking the time to inspire the multitudes, you are a special gift from God.

I think culture causes us to look at Christ’s conception, nativity, and indeed much of his life in a romanticized way. We often fail to realize that he was from a low class (carpenter is likely a minstranslated term which actually means day-laborer from a number of sources that I have read), troubled family. People don’t understand or forget that the angel only appeared to Mary to tell her that she would conceive out of wedlock, not the whole community. No aspect of Jesus or his earthly family’s ;ife was easy.

And Mary and Joseph are one of the most silent voices in the bible. Their faith without human reasoning is truly exemplary.
