For Pro-Lifers: A Reprieve From Death Threats

February 26, 2011 by Gerard M. Nadal

Something I’ve kept hidden on the blog this past year.

News yesterday from Troy Newman of Operation Rescue and Jill Stanek that Theodore Shulman,49, who has sent many of us death threats over the past few years, has been arrested by the FBI and is being held without bond at the Metropolitan Correctional Facility. Listen to the link at Troy Newman to hear a telephone death threat. Jill has much of the backstory at her blog.

Shulman has made repeated threats against such individuals as Bryan Kemper, Jill Stanek, Troy Newman, Fr. Frank Pavone, Lila Rose, Ken Scott, Cheryl Sullenger, Robert George, myself and many others. I’ll dwell on this for a moment here before moving on. As Jill details at her blog:

Shulman’s history is telling. His mother is Alix Kates Shulman, a pro-abort feminist who achieved some level of fame in the 1960s and 70s, during Shulman’s formative years, since he was born in 1961. Here’s Alix’s website. She is most well known for writing the feminist novel, Memoirs of an Ex-Prom Queen.

Alix has spoken of aborting 4 of Shulman’s siblings, “and not one was the result of carelessness.” Theodore has commented on these abortions, saying 2 came before him and 2 after. Shulman has one living sister, Polly, born in 1963.

This isn’t quite over, but at least Shulman is incarcerated.

True, it isn’t quite over. I first encountered Shulman’s wrath on January 25, 2010, when Coming Home was only a month old. Shulman, who claims to be a scientist (molecular biologist, like myself) has a website Operation Counterstrike. Shulman seems to have been deeply affected by the murder of Dr. George Tiller, with that event fueling his rampage. Here is the banner from his website

My writing on the abortion/breast cancer link seems to have angered Shulman who sent me the following two messages a few hours apart as comments on the blog:

2010/01/25 at 6:02 PM
God is sending a revenge-angel to kill Gerard Nadal. Soon. Count on it!

and…

2010/01/25 at 8:36 PM
Soon!

on May 30, this sinister message appeared:

2010/05/30 at 9:21 PM
Will there be PAYBACK for Dr. Tiller?
Will there be COUNTERTERROR against right-to-lifers?
WHO should the TARGETS be?
WHERE do they LIVE?
operationcounterstrike.blogspot.com

Coming from a guy who lives here in NYC, he was more than a little too close to home. I spoke with Regina about it all, about our family’s safety and various courses of action. She pointedly admonished that I not back down and trust in God’s protection and providence, for myself and for the family.

If his intent was terror, Shulman succeeded. I’d like to say that I didn’t let it bother me. It did. It angered me in ways I’ve never experienced anger before; but that subsided with time and prayers for this deranged man. I also received the least of Shulman’s wrath. He has written of Jill Stanek being shot in the face, and similar writings about Father Frank Pavone. Others have had telephone death threats. Click here to listen to an audio death threat at Troy Newman’s blog.

Jill, Robbie George, Troy, and others were very supportive, as was the Joint Terrorism Task Force (FBI & NYPD), as well as Jill’s staff. All have my gratitude and respect.

I ask that all pray for Theodore Shulman, as I have over the past year. Jesus didn’t suggest that. He commands it! Doing so keeps us from hating in return. I’ll be organizing a Divine Mercy Novena for Shulman soon. I thought that I would be happy when this day came, but truth be told, I feel no jubilation. I feel relief, for all who’ve been the targets of this profoundly disturbed man, and I feel an overwhelming sadness for him as he sits in federal jail. I cannot imagine what his life must have been like growing up with his mother (read the links for the horror story).

I hope and pray that in jail Ted Shulman gets the help he so desperately needs, and that the Holy Spirit raids his heart, as He did Dr. Bernard Nathanson. Pray for this man, please. And pray for the law enforcement personnel who risk their lives daily in chasing down terrorists, foreign and domestic, so that we all might live our lives in peace.

Well, what do you know. So that who this character is. Evey so often i would get these very weird posts from “Operation Counterstrike.” After a while i just deleted him. I will have to go back and see how threatening they were.

You see, Gerry, after dealing with the notorious Brian Finkel, anonymous threats were something I did not consider. I guess I must have made his list though if he was taking to reading my blog. Very interesting.

Gerard, it sounds as if God has placed Theodore under your heart as he did mine. Bambino and I have been praying for him for years. I think of him as “Teddy” and always picture a curly headed little boy, looking for his “mother”. I’ve always thought of him as my “wayward son”. How I longed to hold and rock that “boy” and tell him how very precious he is, how much is he cherished, how much God loves him….

I was never the target of his threats (I have no idea why as I have been communicating with him via blogs since the time I moderated at Jill’s…I posted on his website just a few days ago), but I certainly recognized his dark side. Still, I couldn’t/can’t help feeling a deep sorrow at this turn of events.

I’m glad to know that you too are praying for him. I also think of Bernard Nathanson when I think of SoMG and have always hoped for a turn of heart…I still do.

Please, let me know if and when you get that Divine Mercy Novena up. I’ll be first in line.

    God Bless,
    MK

I am so very glad that the police took this seriously. I am glad Jill and Gerard and all are safe!
I know that Shulman is published in the scientific literature.
From what I remember of his comments on blogs, there were mostly lacking in heart and didn’t seem to be filled with hate or violence.
But it seems he changed after Tiller’s death.
I believe Nathanson died a holy man and I pray that Bernard will intercede for Ted.
According to St. Faustina, prayers for conversion are NEVER wasted.
He will be in my prayers too.

This nutcase really got around. Even my insignificant blog received some of his threats. The one you cite from May 30 is identical to what I received at about the same time.

I’d wondered what had happened to him. Pity.

Who ever said that abortion doesn’t cause problems….. for all we know, maybe he was mad that he was robbed of 4 other siblings……

When you first started this blog, I remember you had a lovely photo of your family in your “About” section, and Joseph even had his own section. When the photo and Joseph’s section disappeared, I figured it was for your family’s protection, as a precaution. I’m sorry to hear that it was a reaction to real threats. I hope you and your fellow targeted pro-lifers will enjoy peace of mind now, and that Shulman either is cured of his problems or permanently locked up where he can do no harm.

Like you I am glad they caught him. I got quite a few messages from him & did contact the FBI last year after I found out how serious the threats really were because Jill Stanek had contacted the FBI. I was very impressed with how the agent I talked to handled it & encouraged me to keep him updated if I got more messages. & like you, I knew that nothing should be said about it until he was caught. Finally, like you, I am praying for his conversion as well as that he gets the help he needs.

I’m very glad that this disturbed man is now in custody, and hopefully will get the help he clearly needs. One can only imagine the profound damage caused by his mother’s blithe attitude toward aborting his siblings.

It is good to remember that Jesus does call us to pray for such people, our natural inclination being otherwise.

Is this a reason why you stopped posting on the ABC link. The reason I started following your blog was because there was mention of a daily post on a research paper regarding the ABC link. What happened?
And sorry about the threats. It means you are doing something right.

  10. on February 28, 2011 at 1:48 AM Gerard M. Nadal

    snaul,

I’m about to resume posting on the ABC link. Nobody has intimidated me into silence. If you note the dates on the threats, they predate my major project on the ABC link.

A number of factors conspired to produce a hiatus on the ABC project, none dealing with Shulman or threats. Actually, there have been a bunch of new studies that have come out and I’m working on those. March will be a big month.

So, fear not. More on the way!

I’m beginning to feel special or something. The threat I got from him sounded nothing like what everyone else seemed to have gotten. However, he didn’t necessarily hate me because of my pro-life stance. He got mad at me for banning him from my blog for a week for being rude. Of course, he ended up being banned forever.

Honestly, the only reason he was nice to me was because of MK (we share a blog). I did have some really good conversations with him though. He really was intelligent. All the hate he had is what made him into something more like an animal. I pray for him. When MK was able to get him to stop being a jerk, he showed us that poor little boy she talked about above.

I’ve been watching Star Wars with my son, and he kind of reminds me of Anakin Skywalker. He had the potential to be a very good person, but all his hate and selfish desires changed him into something so evil that he became unrecognizable.

dear mr nadal, I am so glad that you are safe. I had not realized that your outpourings of truth could cause you or your lovely family such danger.

  13. on March 4, 2011 at 6:01 PM Calah

    Dr. Nadal,
I had no idea about this until I read the article about him yesterday which mentioned you. I’m not sure how I missed this post of yours, but wow. I’m so sorry.

And also, you have one awesome wife. I’d probably have been a blubbering, terrified wreck. You and your wife have my profound admiration.

I can’t imagine what a terrible life he must have had. I’m glad he’s in jail so you’re all safe, but his must be a terrible existence. I will pray for him.
