For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by volcanos and volcanic eruptions. The science of Volcanology tells us a great deal about predicting an eruption, and the different types of eruptions.

Some are like Mount St. Helen where the buildup of pressure is so severe that it blows the side off of the mountain in one cataclysmic bang. Other volcanos simply ooze molten lava from their fissures and caldera in rivers that travel far and wide, spreading out and creating an entirely new landscape by burning away all in its path and becoming the foundational rock for an entirely new ecosystem.

The eruptions are preceded by increasing tremors, small earthquakes that herald the arrival of the searing newness from within the earth. Those tremors are a warning to all in the vicinity that impending newness cannot be stopped, and will clear away the most recalcitrant inhabitants who do not respect the power below their feet that is rising up to meet them.

So it has been in New York City these past months with the Pastors from a broad spectrum of Christian churches, most especially those in communities of color. The government’s data on abortion have gone out and shocked the consciences of even ardent proaborts. 89% of all abortions in New York City are had by minority community members. Only 11% are had by whites. And now the slumbering giant of the inner city has been awakened.

It began in early January with a rally in northern Manhattan, near Harlem. At that rally, I gave the numbers to a heartsick packed church. 4.3 million abortions in NYC since 1970, with close to 3.3 million being black and hispanics. In 2008, there were 512 abortions per 1000 live births for whites, while there were 1,260 abortions per 1000 live births for blacks.

One year later, the numbers for whites remain essentially the same, but the percentage of black pregnancies ending in abortion rose to 60%, or 1,500 abortions per 1,000 live births. And so the tremors began.

Since then, pastors have been meeting and discussing the impending NYC Council Bill 371, which will silence pregnancy centers. They have been discussing it in terms of the numbers in NYC. The tremors have gotten a liitle bit stronger.

Then Lila Rose released her explosive videos last week of their latest sting, and the pastors began to question why this organization, Planned Parenthood, operates 78% of their business in their neighborhoods. They have begun to question that 78% in light of the fact that 79% of all abortions in NYC are black hispanic. And they were disgusted at the aiding and abetting of child sex trafficking. And so the rumbles grew louder.

Then, the other sponsor of Bill 371, NARAL NY president Kelli Conlin has been targeted for a probe into massive financial misdeeds. God is moving in a mighty way, and now the earth trembles further.

The House voted decisively to cut Planned Parenthood’s funding in the wake of the latest in a long train of scandals, and fissures opened in the landscape.

Today, an ecumenical gathering of five priests, approximately 30 pastors, chaplains, and two protestant bishops took place. Again, I provided the numbers and discussed the science. The age-old divisions between Evangelical, Baptist, Pentecostal and Catholic have crumbled as we are uniting in our common humanity, as sons and daughters of God. Thanks to Planned Parenthood, NARAL, and the proabort politicians, we see the ancient divisions as luxuries we can no longer afford. Praise God. Next week, there will be dozens more pastors gathering to unite in a new pro-life coalition of clergy from across the spectrum of Christianity, as well as Judaism.

Today the lava started flowing, and the magma chamber of righteous indignation at the decimation of communities of color, at the wholesale slaughter of the unborn cannot be stopped. It has begun to flow, not with a cataclysmic bang, but with a steady, consuming, incremental creep across the landscape. It will consume this abortion industry as the purifying and sanctifying fire of the Holy Spirit of God continues to renew the face of our land. And this righteous indignation at the slaughter of innocents will harden, as all lava hardens. When it does, it will become the new bedrock, as all lava flows do, upon which an entirely new ecosystem will form. A just and righteous people forming a Culture of Life and a Civilization of Love.

Those politicians and parties who refuse to change will simply be voted into political oblivion, such is the power that has risen up to meet them.

When Evangelical, Pentecostal, Baptist, and Catholic clergy all unite in love and fellowship, in solidarity and mutual admiration, it’s a sign as sure as the plume of smoke rising above the mountain:

It’s all over for the proabort left. Change or make alternative career plans. The Father has united His children in opposition to you, and the mountainous divisions that have been overcome should be a sign to you of the magnitude of both opposition and unity you now face.

It’s been an interesting week in the Catholic blogosphere, to say the least.

The most damning evidence about Planned Parenthood has emerged in their 95 year history of eugenic genocide, complete with the evidence that they:

*May well have tainted the Virginia blood supply.
*Do not use the $350 million per year in federal funding for its intended purpose of providing health care for those without insurance or cash.
*Coached a pimp in how to lie about the age of minors in order to procure abortions.
*Showed a consistent willingness to aid and abet child sex-trafficking.

This coupled with the most pro-life Congress since Roe v Wade who were ramping up to defund Planned Parenthood, and the Catholic blogosphere erupts in spasms of indignation at…

Not Planned Parenthood…

But Lila Rose.

It is perfectly understandable that methodology is important. How we arrive at the end matters, and it is altogether proper to address methodology. But there is a proportionalism in the outrage that is frighteningly lopsided, to the the point of having handed Planned Parenthood Lila’s head on a stake. Of course, the question is, why?

The next question, in light of Lila’s past four years is, why now?

The last question is, why the magnitude?

To answer the more generic, “Why?”, and to return to matters of methodology, every discipline needs a method, and certainly this is true in science as well as morality and ethics. In biology, a poorly designed study yields data that are uncertain, especially if proper positive and negative controls are not employed. Data mean nothing if they are not held to an objective standard. The data are regarded as so much unintelligible gibberish in such cases.

In the Live Action sting, it is the contention of several (though not all) ethicists that Lila’s method failed the standard of the sacred sciences. It is contended that she used unjust means (lying) toward achieving a noble and just end (revealing the truth about what really goes on behind closed doors at PP). But in this case, the data are not unintelligible. They are not gibberish, as they are evaluated against the known standards in morality, law, medicine, and ethics. The behaviors are atrocious. So, in a worst case scenario, imperfect means were employed to yield a bumper crop of highly valuable, highly intelligible, and highly useful data.

The crux of the issue is whether Lila’s actions rise to the level of lying as defined in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and which I treated in another post which can be viewed here.

In several critiques of my critique, many have held to philosophical traditions, many very Catholic, but do not address the core of my argument. That core is whether or not the method has become its own standard, and does not address the issue that permeates the Gospels, namely that Jesus used the spirit of the law as the external standard for guiding observance of the letter of the law. In the passages I cite, he drives this point home by citing how David broke the law, defended His Apostles’ breaking of the law, and then went so far as to rub the pharisees noses in it by healing a man on the Sabbath in their synagogue. In all of this, the spirit of the law was cited as the rationale for determining whether the precept of the law as observed violated the higher spirit of the law.

Despite my repeated attempts to engage the clear teaching of Jesus on this, the matter has been consistently side-stepped.

Growing up in the 70’s I suffered through situational morality and ethics which basically left one rudderless. Everything was relative. Catholic intellectuals who came of age in that time and saw the awesome destructiveness of that are right to be wary of anything that smacks of situational ethics or morality today. But we can perhaps be too wary and err in the other direction. The disproportionate ink spilled over Lila would seem to suggest that perhaps a bit of that is in play.

Mark Shea, whom I read regularly and respect immensely, has written that he is concerned that the Live Action sting will set the pro-life movement off on a trajectory of dishonesty for the sake of short-term gain, becoming liars for Jesus. While this may anger some pro-lifers, I would caution that Mark’s concern is a valid concern, but I would also suggest that it has little soil in which to grow into reality.

Apart from the Live Action sting, there is precious little need in the pro-life movement for such undercover investigative techniques. In fact, the great strength of the pro-life movement today is that we have scientific evidence in great abundance to support us at every turn, whether it’s the sonogram technology revealing the intricacy and beauty of embryonic and fetal development, or the vast bodies of literature showing the psychological, oncological, gynecological, obstetrical, and infectious post-abortive sequelae. The truth is on our side. The proaborts have nothing but hackneyed bumper stickers.

So while Mark’s warning needs to be taken to heart, I just don’t see where pro-lifers would ever need to lie, and that brings us back to the central question which will not be resolved anytime soon:

Did Live Action lie?

Beyond that, the magnitude of the criticism of Lila Rose seems greatly misplaced, and more than a little ill-timed.

Finally, there has emerged a great deal of tension between the scholars and the troops on the front lines at the “clinics”, and not a little anger. Pure academia has its dangers, to be certain, as does pure activism. The former may seem cold and aloof, while the latter are left feeling as though they are being expected to bring a feather to a gunfight, and are tempted at times to use the most expedient means. I’ve worked on both sides, and see this from both perspectives. Not surprisingly, I see a need for a meeting in the middle. Such a meeting is not to suggest a compromise with morality, but rather to discuss whether indeed immorality was committed. Again, it is my contention that it was not. I also am waiting to see a comparable level of critique of Planned Parenthood from those who have taken exception with Lila.

Somehow, I surmise many will claim that their work is about critiquing moral methodology, hence the focus on Lila. To such a response I would say that a critique of Planned Parenthood’s moral and ethical methodology, based upon the sum total of Live Action’s four years of data, should keep these authors busy for months to come.

Update 2/20: The Last Word Here

In the midst of Lila Rose’s greatest triumph, one that has dealt a deep and potentially mortal wound to Planned Parenthood, Catholic theologians and philosophers have raised the issue of whether Lila’s techniques are moral. The question is, “Did she lie?”

The articles written have ranged from thoughtful, deliberative pieces to hatchet jobs. I’m not linking to them here, because I don’t wish to fuel the fire that threatens to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Around the web, such hypotheticals have been raised as, “If I were sheltering Jews in Nazi Germany and the SS knocked and asked if I were sheltering Jews, I would be morally obligated not to lie. I would need to tell the truth.”

Unbelievable! And from people whom I respect greatly.

I have no desire to get into debates over what constitutes a lie or not, but simply desire to go on record as saying that I would lie through my teeth in order to preserve the Jews whom I would definitely shelter.

Would the majesty of God be so offended by such a lie that I would be damned for all eternity? I think not.

Jesus came to reveal to us the intimate, loving relationship that He had with the Father, and to tell us that we are called to share in that loving relationship. So what kind of Father did Jesus reveal to us? Consider this from Matthew 7:9-12

“Which one of you would hand his son a stone when he asks for a loaf of bread,or a snake when he asks for a fish? If you then, who are wicked, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good things to those who ask him.”

Let’s play with that one for a moment.

Would I want my children raped, beaten, tortured, murdered? Of course not. And if I who am sinful desire the good for my children, how much more does God? Would the majesty of God not require that we do all in our power to prevent a far greater sin from befalling the defenseless? It is at this point that the debate about the ends justifying the means comes in. In the case of Lila, in the case of sheltering Jews, I simply refuse to get caught up in academic standards that are held up as their own internal standard, leading to the implosion of charity.

This is what happened to the Pharisees. The letter of the law became the internal standard, leading to a myopic cyclone from which they could not escape. Consider Matthew 12:1-14

” At that time Jesus was going through a field of grain on the sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick the heads of grain and eat them. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, ‘See, your disciples are doing what is unlawful to do on the sabbath.’ He said to them,

“‘Have you not read what David did when he and his companions were hungry, how he went into the house of God and ate the bread of offering, which neither he nor his companions but only the priests could lawfully eat? Or have you not read in the law that on the sabbath the priests serving in the temple violate the sabbath and are innocent? I say to you, something greater than the temple is here. If you knew what this meant, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned these innocent men. For the Son of Man is Lord of the sabbath.’

“Moving on from there, he went into their synagogue. And behold, there was a man there who had a withered hand. They questioned him, ‘is it lawful to cure on the sabbath?’ so that they might accuse him. He said to them,

“‘Which one of you who has a sheep that falls into a pit on the sabbath will not take hold of it and lift it out? How much more valuable a person is than a sheep. So it is lawful to do good on the sabbath.’ Then he said to the man, ‘Stretch out your hand.’

“He stretched it out, and it was restored as sound as the other. But the Pharisees went out and took counsel against him to put him to death.”

So, though the letter of the law would prohibit any work on the Sabbath, Jesus reminds us that violating the letter of the law is common sense when it means saving life, or doing good; whether that means saving a sheep, or a teenage prostitute, or a Jew cowering in my basement.

Yet, our modern-day doctors of the law have taken it upon themselves to kill Lila in the media.

Perhaps it comes from seven years of working with teen prostitutes, but I cannot fathom how Lila is being pilloried. I’ve dealt with the horrors, the children who can’t sleep at night because of the nightmares, the children who have no soul left and are the walking dead. Like Jesus, I’ve kept myself from getting sucked into the vortex of detached academia and moved among the wounded. It is the only bulwark against Phariseeism. I’ll never forget the girl who told us one night when she couldn’t sleep that she must have serviced at least two thousand men.

She was sixteen.

But to put the issue to bed, the Catechism of the Catholic Church states the following:

2483 Lying is the most direct offense against the truth. To lie is to speak or act against the truth in order to lead someone into error. By injuring man’s relation to truth and to his neighbor, a lie offends against the fundamental relation of man and of his word to the Lord.

2488 The right to the communication of the truth is not unconditional. Everyone must conform his life to the Gospel precept of fraternal love. This requires us in concrete situations to judge whether or not it is appropriate to reveal the truth to someone who asks for it.

2489 Charity and respect for the truth should dictate the response to every request for information or communication. The good and safety of others, respect for privacy, and the common good are sufficient reasons for being silent about what ought not be known or for making use of a discreet language. The duty to avoid scandal often commands strict discretion. No one is bound to reveal the truth to someone who does not have the right to know it.

The undercover actions of Lila’s team were designed to bring the truth to light, for the benefit of the PP staff, and for society. Her actions were not designed to lead anyone into error, but OUT of error, and so they fail to satisfy the criterion of intent in #2483, highlighted above.

It is interesting to note that the people who have taken up the position against Lila are all academics, which points to the dangers faced by scholars. We can get caught up in the world of the pure ideal, a world where fictional jews are betrayed by those who like young George Washington said,

“I cannot tell a lie”.

It’s easy to do our scholarship as we move fictional armies about the board, see fictional babies die, see theoretical children pimped.

It’s easy to stand and watch them die, because we know that they really don’t exist, except as theoretical constructs in our own minds.

Then we get to go home to our real families, whom we would watch slaughtered one-by-one by some modern-day SS troopers who come looking for them, because after all, we cannot tell a lie.

Or would we?

My Article in today’s LifeNews.com

While the civilized world reeled in horror at Planned Parenthood’s demonstrated willingness to aid and abet child sex-trafficking, as revealed in Live Action’s latest sting, another consistent theme seems to have gone largely unnoticed in those videos:

Planned Parenthood caters to those with either insurance or cash, and has repeatedly suggested to the confederate posing as a pimp, as well as to others, that the same STD testing services may be obtained for free at the county health department, and also by donating blood. See the videos here. Such repetitious advice from center to center raises the concern that Planned Parenthood is clearly not living up to its commitment to use a third of a billion tax-payer dollars annually to provide healthcare for citizens who lack private insurance or cash.

In the most egregious of the videos, the Roanoke video, clinic employee (and nurse?) Leslie has the following exchanges with the pimp:

PP: Um, here’s, here’s kinda the way it works. Ok? And, I’ll tell ya right off. And if you
think there’s several people, you can go to the Health Department and it doesn’t cost you

Pimp: It won’t cost me anything.

PP: And they’ll treat you for free.

Pimp: How much does it cost here?

PP: Um, it’s about 160 dollars.

Pimp: Ok

PP: So, I mean it’s kind of expensive here.

Leslie goes on to reiterate, or confirm, no fewer than ten times, that free services are available elsewhere. A cash-rich pimp with an entire stable of girls is a windfall for a place like Planned Parenthood, but they evidently don’t need the money.

Further, Leslie doesn’t seem to care that she may be the modern Typhoid Mary, contaminating the Virginia blood supply with her ghastly ‘professional’ advice:

PP: Well, uh *laughs*, see I tell a lot of people, I say if you know, if you’re not quite sure,
you’re not having any symptoms, but for peace of mind, go donate blood – cause if you go
donate blood, they have to test for everything anyway. And you know, a lot of plasma places,
they’ll test you for free.

Pimp: That’s good information.

PP: And they pay you for your plasma. You know what I mean? So, there’s several different
ways around it without having to spend a whole lot of money.

Perhaps Leslie has forgotten that HIV can take up to three months before being detectable in the blood, and here she is sending a pimp and his entourage to donate blood as a means of increasing the pimp’s bottom line! Such selflessness is rare in business, but this is a deadly business.

Planned Parenthood has made much of their firing of the Perth Amboy Nurse Manager for her role in the first video released. No word of Leslie’s firing has come across the wires, nor has there been word of Planned Parenthood contacting all blood donation centers in Virginia alerting them to Leslie’s statement: “I tell a lot of people, I say if you know, if you’re not quite sure, you’re not having any symptoms, but for peace of mind, go donate blood.”

If Planned Parenthood will not contact the authorities, then Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell needs to launch an immediate investigation of the Virginia blood supply and close down every Planned Parenthood in the state until such time as he is satisfied that Planned Parenthood is operating within the standard of care for a public health institution. Such an investigation needs to look for any and all cases of inexplicable STD and HIV infection following blood transfusions, especially in the counties adjacent to Roanoke. Then, Leslie’s case needs to be handed over to the State Attorney General for investigation of what criminal charges may be brought against her.

It is time for America to get serious about such criminality among medical professionals. Planned Parenthood’s employee has seriously compromised the public health in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and they have remained silent. Their employees have repeatedly demonstrated that they are willing to refer the poor and indigent to the county for free health services, the same services for which they receive over a third of a billion dollars per year as a subsidy.

In every sting, Live Action has shown this organization to be criminal in both its negligence and intent. At current funding levels, Planned Parenthood is receiving over 3.5 billion dollars per decade. Imagine the serious inroads that money would make in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, or Childhood Leukemia.

Grants of any size are a sacred trust, and all the more as the numbers of dollars climb into the billions. Planned Parenthood has broken faith with the American people repeatedly and, in so doing, has made of themselves an organization of pariahs.

In an age of less and less money, the public health requires judicial and faithful stewardship with every tax dollar. Given the challenges faced by an ever-increasing elderly population, it is time to defund this criminal enterprise and spend our money in areas that will yield the greatest possible returns.

Subsidizing the sex lives of teens doesn’t cut it.

Day 9
Today bring to Me SOULS WHO HAVE BECOME LUKEWARM,* and immerse them in the abyss of My mercy. These souls wound My Heart most painfully. My soul suffered the most dreadful loathing in the Garden of Olives because of lukewarm souls. They were the reason I cried out: ‘Father, take this cup away from Me, if it be Your will.’ For them, the last hope of salvation is to run to My mercy.

On this final day of the Novena for Fr. Euteneuer, let us pray for us to approach the love of Christ and His mission, in the same zeal and fervor Fr Euteneuer has shown in the past and pray that Fr. Euteneuer may again join the fight against evil and the salvation of souls in whatever capacity his superior sees fit. May he accept his duties in great humility and work towards the kingdom in the same light of Christ’s mercy.

Most compassionate Jesus, You are Compassion Itself. I bring lukewarm souls into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart. In this fire of Your pure love, let these tepid souls, who, like corpses, filled You with such deep loathing, be once again set aflame. O Most Compassionate Jesus, exercise the omnipotence of Your mercy and draw them into the very ardor of Your love, and bestow upon them the gift of holy love, for nothing is beyond Your power.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon lukewarm souls who are nonetheless enfolded in the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. Father of Mercy, I beg You by the bitter Passion of Your Son and by His three-hour agony on the Cross: Let them, too, glorify the abyss of Your mercy. Amen.

No, I’m not speaking in the voice of an Antebellum Plantation Owner regarding his slaves, though I could understand how one could be led to believe it, so entrenched is this list of stereotypes. I’m actually describing the proabort left who are waging a genocidal war against African Americans, and the time has come to end this selective targeting of blacks by Planned Parenthood, who operate 78% of their “clinics” in the inner city, where blacks comprise 12% of the U.S. population.

Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards, and Rep. Nancy Pelosi

Isn’t it perverse that the shopworn stereotypes of blacks are actually quite descriptive of those who hate them to the point of enslaving and killing them? In psychology it’s called ‘projection’.

Of course today one doesn’t hear the leaders on the left speak these words about blacks, at least not publicly.

VP Joe Biden

Unless of course it’s our Democrat Vice President Joe Biden speaking of Barak Obama when they were both U.S. Senators:

“I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy,” Biden said. “I mean, that’s a storybook, man.”

The FIRST??? Really Joe???

It says quite a bit about the man making the statement.

These are evil people, with an evil agenda, and the time has come for them to be exposed for just who and what they are. They are unfit to govern, and until they address all of their shortcomings as human beings, as outlined in their stereotypical bill of indictment above, will remain unfit for public service.

NYC Council Speaker Quinn

Blacks need to wake up to the genocide happening right under their noses, and to the reality of the modern Democrat Party and the fact that abortion is the central organizing principle of their party. Whites need to come to grips with the new manifestation of racism, one so much deadlier than any other, that it makes the days of the Klan seem quaint by comparison.

In New York City in 2009, 60% of black pregnancies ended in abortion.

Numbers that staggering are everyone’s problem.

More to come here at Coming Home during Black History Month.

Day 8
Today bring to Me THE SOULS WHO ARE DETAINED IN PURGATORY, and immerse them in the abyss of My mercy. Let the torrents of My Blood cool down their scorching flames. All these souls are greatly loved by Me. They are making retribution to My justice. It is in your power to bring them relief. Draw all the indulgences from the treasury of My Church and offer them on their behalf. Oh, if you only knew the torments they suffer, you would continually offer for them the alms of the spirit and pay off their debt to My justice.

Through the power of a repentant sinner may those who offer the prayers in Spiritual Works of Mercy, as a renewed sacrifice for others, release the favors of God and be a shining example of compassion to others.

Most Merciful Jesus, You Yourself have said that You desire mercy; so I bring into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart the souls in Purgatory, souls who are very dear to You, and yet, who must make retribution to Your justice. May the streams of Blood and Water which gushed forth from Your Heart put out the flames of Purgatory, that there, too, the power of Your mercy may be celebrated.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon the souls suffering in Purgatory, who are enfolded in the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. I beg You, by the sorrowful Passion of Jesus Your Son, and by all the bitterness with which His most sacred Soul was flooded: Manifest Your mercy to the souls who are under Your just scrutiny. Look upon them in no other way but only through the Wounds of Jesus, Your dearly beloved Son; for we firmly believe that there is no limit to Your goodness and compassion. Amen.

Day 7
Today bring to Me THE SOULS WHO ESPECIALLY VENERATE AND GLORIFY MY MERCY,* and immerse them in My mercy. These souls sorrowed most over my Passion and entered most deeply into My spirit. They are living images of My Compassionate Heart. These souls will shine with a special brightness in the next life. Not one of them will go into the fire of hell. I shall particularly defend each one of them at the hour of death.

Let us pray for the penitent soul that through the mercy of God and through the Blood of the Lamb, has been reconciled to God. That by this gift of reconciliation may be an example of how merciful our loving God is and lead others to seek that same mercy.

Most Merciful Jesus, whose Heart is Love Itself, receive into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart the souls of those who particularly extol and venerate the greatness of Your mercy. These souls are mighty with the very power of God Himself. In the midst of all afflictions and adversities they go forward, confident of Your mercy; and united to You, O Jesus, they carry all mankind on their shoulders. These souls will not be judged severely, but Your mercy will embrace them as they depart from this life.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon the souls who glorify and venerate Your greatest attribute, that of Your fathomless mercy, and who are enclosed in the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. These souls are a living Gospel; their hands are full of deeds of mercy, and their hearts, overflowing with joy, sing a canticle of mercy to You, O Most High! I beg You O God:

Show them Your mercy according to the hope and trust they have placed in You. Let there be accomplished in them the promise of Jesus, who said to them that during their life, but especially at the hour of death, the souls who will venerate this fathomless mercy of His, He, Himself, will defend as His glory. Amen.

Day 6

Today bring to Me THE MEEK AND HUMBLE SOULS AND THE SOULS OF LITTLE CHILDREN, and immerse them in My mercy. These souls most closely resemble My Heart. They strengthened Me during My bitter agony. I saw them as earthly Angels, who will keep vigil at My altars. I pour out upon them whole torrents of grace. Only the humble soul is capable of receiving My grace. I favor humble souls with My confidence.

Let us pray for the gift of humility to pray for the poor sinner as they seek refuge in Christ’s Ocean of Mercy. In their humility may they find reconciliation and a renewed sense of mission to spread hope through Christ’s bountiful mercy.

Most Merciful Jesus, You yourself have said, “Learn from Me for I am meek and humble of heart.” Receive into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart all meek and humble souls and the souls of little children. These souls send all heaven into ecstasy and they are the heavenly Father’s favorites. They are a sweet-smelling bouquet before the throne of God; God Himself takes delight in their fragrance. These souls have a permanent abode in Your Most Compassionate Heart, O Jesus, and they unceasingly sing out a hymn of love and mercy.

Day 5

Today bring to Me THE SOULS OF THOSE WHO HAVE SEPARATED THEMSELVES FROM MY CHURCH,* and immerse them in the ocean of My mercy. During My bitter Passion they tore at My Body and Heart, that is, My Church. As they return to unity with the Church, My wounds heal and in this way they alleviate My Passion.

Let us pray for healing of the Body of Christ and seek mercy for those who, by their actions or inactions, led astray, the sheep whom Christ has called. May the separated sheep seek the Divine Mercy and be washed clean of sin so as to live forever in the kingdom.

Most Merciful Jesus, Goodness Itself, You do not refuse light to those who seek it of You. Receive into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart the souls of those who have separated themselves from Your Church. Draw them by Your light into the unity of the Church, and do not let them escape from the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart; but bring it about that they, too, come to glorify the generosity of Your mercy.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon the souls of those who have separated themselves from Your Son’s Church, who have squandered Your blessings and misused Your graces by obstinately persisting in their errors. Do not look upon their errors, but upon the love of Your own Son and upon His bitter Passion, which He underwent for their sake, since they, too, are enclosed in His Most Compassionate Heart. Bring it about that they also may glorify Your great mercy for endless ages. Amen.

Day 4

Today bring to Me THOSE WHO DO NOT BELIEVE IN GOD* AND THOSE WHO DO NOT YET KNOW ME. I was thinking also of them during My bitter Passion, and their future zeal comforted My Heart. Immerse them in the ocean of My mercy.

Let us pray for those, who by this scandal, do not lose faith but seek a deeper understanding of mercy which only God can reveal. In their search for Truth may seek it all the more.

Most compassionate Jesus, You are the Light of the whole world. Receive into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart the souls of those who do not believe in God and of those who as yet do not know You. Let the rays of Your grace enlighten them that they, too, together with us, may extol Your wonderful mercy; and do not let them escape from the abode which is Your Most Compassionate Heart.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon the souls of those who do not believe in You, and of those who as yet do not know You, but who are enclosed in the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. Draw them to the light of the Gospel. These souls do not know what great happiness it is to love You. Grant that they, too, may extol the generosity of Your mercy for endless ages. Amen.

Day 3
Today bring to Me ALL DEVOUT AND FAITHFUL SOULS, and immerse them in the ocean of My mercy. In this way you will console Me in the bitter grief into which the loss of souls plunges Me.

Let us pray for Fr Euteneuer, and all who minister, that they lead souls to a closer relationship with Christ, even through their human weakness. That we who are affected by this may again find the full strength of devout and faithful service in mercy and charity to all we serve.

Most Merciful Jesus, from the treasury of Your mercy, You impart Your graces in great abundance to each and all. Receive us into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart and never let us escape from It. We beg this grace of You by that most wondrous love for the heavenly Father with which Your Heart burns so fiercely.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon faithful souls, as upon the inheritance of Your Son. For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, grant them Your blessing and surround them with Your constant protection. Thus may they never fail in love or lose the treasure of the holy faith, but rather, with all the hosts of Angels and Saints, may they glorify Your boundless mercy for endless ages. Amen.

Over at Jill Stanek’s blog a debate between a pro-abort troll and the pro-lifers has developed, a debate over what the name “Fetus” means and what sort of rights issue forth from that name’s definition.

This is a massive blunder that pro-lifers get sucked into about 3,000 times a day. The dignity of the person does not issue forth from the meaning of an ancient Latin word, neither does the dignity of the organism depend on some arbitrarily line drawn across the developmental continuum. When presented with this losing argument by proaborts, we need to counter by reframing the question around objective reality and not get sucked into this quagmire.

My response to the proabort named Doug:

I’m a biologist, and we’re the ones who name things. Often we (men) name things after our wives (and since I’m a microbiologist, Mrs. Nadal has assured me that the day I ever name a disease after her is the day that she serves me with divorce papers).

Therefore, nomenclature can be an entirely arbitrary endeavor that is not descriptive of the biological entity before us.

For example, Escherichia coli (E. coli) does not look at all like Dr. Theodor Escherich who discovered it. (Trust me on this one. I’ve looked at lots of E. coli under the scope.) Nevertheless, Dr. Escherich spent his life saving people, and while some E. coli are normal gut flora without which we would die, some that have acquired some pretty nasty genes can kill us in a matter of days (the dreaded 0157:H7).

So not even a namesake necessarily shares the function of the one whose name it bears.

The same with developmental nomenclature. The reality of the embryological or fetal organism is not governed by its name any more than the benign/killer natures of Escherichia strains are a function of that sainted physician’s name.

“Fetus” describes a developmental stage shared by many organisms in the animal kingdom. Thus, there is nothing particularly human about the word for a biologist. Thus the word is hardly descriptive of human reality. (Pro-lifers don’t go to war over the deaths of fetal pigs, which are used by the tens of thousands in biology labs annually)

The truth here is that a human organism has a defined life cycle which begins at the moment of fertilization of a human egg (mother’s gametic tissue) by a human sperm (father’s gametic tissue) and becomes a new entity which is neither mother, nor father’s gametic tissue, but a stand-alone organism. A new human animal with its own unique genetic identity.

The rights attendant to that new animal derive from the kind of animal it is (human). If one disagrees with this fundamental premise, then one would not be at all disturbed by the happenings at Dr. Kermit Gosnell’s office. Further, one would not be any more bothered at the thought of saving those fetuses for a dissection lab than one would at the thought of using fetal pigs. For that matter, it would be an interesting lab to dissect a fetal human side-by-side with a fetal pig.

But I’m sure the very thought of that wrenches the gut of even the most strident proabort, and the question is:

Today bring to Me THE SOULS OF PRIESTS AND RELIGIOUS, and immerse them in My unfathomable mercy. It was they who gave Me strength to endure My bitter Passion. Through them as through channels My mercy flows out upon mankind.

Let us pray especially for Fr. Thomas Euteneuer, and for all Priests and religious, who succumb to sin and ask for mercy, to be reconciled to God and to His People. That through their faithful service, renewed with compassion and mercy they may be the catalyst for all who seek mercy and lead them by a renewed witness to your love.

Most Merciful Jesus, from whom comes all that is good, increase Your grace in men and women consecrated to Your service,* that they may perform worthy works of mercy; and that all who see them may glorify the Father of Mercy who is in heaven.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon the company of chosen ones in Your vineyard—upon the souls of priests and religious; and endow them with the strength of Your blessing. For the love of the Heart of Your Son in which they are enfolded, impart to them Your power and light, that they may be able to guide others in the way of salvation and with one voice sing praise to Your boundless mercy for ages without end. Amen.

Today the Coming Home pro-life family lifts up in love and prayer Father Thomas Euteneuer and all affected by this chapter in his life. It is a very small chapter in a very large book that is filled with heroic love and self-sacrifice for the People of God, especially those in the womb. We pray for full restoration of all involved, and that this chapter be lost between all of the good that has come before, and all that is to follow.

Some Notes: First, for our non-Catholic brothers and sisters, novenas are nine days of intercessory prayer. We welcome you to join us in the novena prayers, or to pray along with us each night at 9 PM EST in any manner of prayer that you prefer.

Second, I’ve forwarded word of our gathering to Father Euteneuer. Please feel free to leave him any supportive message you wish.

Finally, Deacon Marcelino Hernandez of the Archdiocese of Chicago has graciously consented to lead us in prayer. What follows are the Divine Mercy Novena prayers with Deacon Hernandez’ adaptations for our special intentions and posted here. I link to the chaplet at the end of the prayers.

Thank you Deacon Hernandez.

And now, Deacon Hernandez leads us in prayer:

✞ ✞ ✞

As we begin this novena for Fr. Euteneuer let us keep in mind all the other souls who have, may or will fall to temptations and lose sight of what God has called us to be; witnesses to the Gospel. Let us also invoke the spiritual help of Pope John Paul II, who through his teachings on the Theology of the Body, has given the world a tool to help us to understand ourselves better and given us a tool to fight off evil and sin to embrace our giftedness to one another and our Creator. Let us ask St. Joseph, Mary’s most chaste spouse, to intercede for all of us and especially for Fr. Euteneuer as he rises up from his fall, to a greater appreciation and understanding of his gift of a renewed chastity. And let us pray to Mary, the Patroness of Priests, to cover her servant priests under her mantle as they seek a deeper love for Her Son and loving priestly service to His Church. In light of all that we have seen, we are called to be a people of mercy and are warned in Matthew Chapter 7 that we must always keep our lives in order (vs. 4) as we seek to enter the narrow gate (vs. 13). That the works that we do speak of how we follow Christ (vs 17) and in our fidelity to Him, what storms come, will not wash away what has been built on the Rock of our salvation (vs. 25).

Today bring to Me ALL MANKIND, ESPECIALLY ALL SINNERS, and immerse them in the ocean of My mercy. In this way you will console Me in the bitter grief into which the loss of souls plunges Me.

Let us pray for Thomas Euteneuer, as a man who is subject to the same weaknesses as all mankind due to the fall of our first parents, and for all who fall out of grace who are overcome by sin; That our trust in Jesus and his infinite mercy may raise us up to His splendor and a newness of life.

Most Merciful Jesus, whose very nature it is to have compassion on us and to forgive us, do not look upon our sins but upon our trust which we place in Your infinite goodness. Receive us all into the abode of Your Most Compassionate Heart, and never let us escape from It. We beg this of You by Your love which unites You to the Father and the Holy Spirit.

Eternal Father, turn Your merciful gaze upon all mankind and especially upon poor sinners, all enfolded in the Most Compassionate Heart of Jesus. For the sake of His sorrowful Passion show us Your mercy, that we may praise the omnipotence of Your mercy for ever and ever. Amen.
